What is graphite crucible?

A graphite crucible is a type of refractory material used for high-temperature applications. It is made from pure graphite, which provides excellent thermal shock resistance and high-temperature stability. Graphite crucibles are typically used in the melting and casting of metals, ceramics, and other materials that require high-temperature processing. They offer superior performance in terms of heat resistance, thermal conductivity, and chemical inertness, making them ideal for various industrial applications.

In order to use graphite crucibles for your application, you need to know more about the basics of graphite crucibles, such as what it is made of, common uses and precautions, etc.

Graphite Crucibles Basic Resources

Graphite Crucibles: What Are They Made Of?

Graphite, silicon carbide, silica, refractory clay, asphalt, and tar are the main raw materials of graphite crucibles.

Graphite is the primary raw material for crucible production, accounting for 45-55% of the ingredients, and crystallized flaky and needle (block) graphite is of the highest quality. It is generally necessary to use flaky medium carbon graphite for the production of graphite crucibles, with a carbon content of 85-93%. The graphite particle size is selected according to the crucible performance.

In general, large crucibles with volumes above 100# use 32 mesh large scale graphite; medium crucibles with volumes between 60# and 80# use 80 mesh large scale graphite; small crucibles with volumes less than 50# use 100 mesh fine scale graphite; handmade shaped crucibles use 100 mesh fine scale graphite.

There are several requirements for clay composition, including purity, plasticity, physical and chemical properties that are stable. It also needs to have a high refractoriness and good thermal properties.

Due to the different substances and use conditions of crucible melting, there is a difference in the proportions of raw materials used in the production of ingredients. This proportion should be determined in a reasonable manner according to the performance, function, and use conditions of the crucible.

Learn More About the benefits of Graphite Crucible

Graphite Crucible’s excellent physical properties have made it one of the most casting supplies for decades. Read the following article to learn more about the application areas.

What Is Graphite Crucible?

The graphite crucible, also known as molten copper ladle, molten copper, etc., is a class of crucibles made of graphite, clay, silica, and waxy stone. Graphite crucibles are designed for melting non-ferrous metals and their alloys, such as copper, brass, gold, silver, zinc, and lead.

As a consequence of its low coefficient of thermal expansion during high temperature use, graphite crucibles are capable of resisting rapid cold and heat with certain strain-resistance. In addition to its corrosion resistance to acidic and alkaline solutions, it is also chemically stable, and it does not participate in any chemical reactions during melting.

In the graphite crucible, the inner wall is smooth, so melted metal liquid isn’t easily riddled. This makes the metal liquid easy to cast and is suitable for casting and molding in different kinds of molds.

Manufacturing Process Used To Form A Graphite Crucible

Graphite crucibles are made by hand molding, spin molding, and pressure molding. Crucible quality is related to molding method. Structure, density, porosity, and mechanical strength of crucible bodies are determined by molding method.

For shaped crucibles that can’t be molded by rotational molding or compression molding, hand molding is used. The hand molding process can be combined with spin molding for some shaped crucibles.

During rotational molding, the canister machine is rotated to drive the mold, then the inner knife is used to extrude the mud as it is being molded into the crucible.

In pressure molding, oil pressure, water pressure, air pressure, and other pressures are applied to the steel mold for the crucible molding tool. Compared with rotational molding, it has simple process, short production cycle, high yield and efficiency, low labor intensity, less molding water, low crucible shrinkage and porosity, and high product quality.

How To Store The Graphite Crucible?

Proper storage method is crucial to ensure graphite crucibles’ durability and longevity. Here are some tips on how to store them:

Cool the crucible: Allow the crucible to cool down completely before storing it. Avoid storing a hot crucible, as this can cause thermal shock and damage the crucible.

Clean the crucible: Remove any remaining metal and flux residue from the crucible and clean it thoroughly before storing.

Store in a dry place: Store the crucible in an open dry place to prevent moisture from damaging the crucible. Avoid storing it in a damp or humid environment.

Use a crucible plate: Always use a crucible plate to support the crucible during use and storage, as this can help prevent damage to the bottom of the crucible.

Store away from induction furnace or fire: Store the crucible away from the furnace or fire to prevent it from getting damaged by heat or fire.

Use tongs when handling: Always use tongs when handling the crucible to avoid damaging the component.

Store based on melting temperature: Store crucibles for melting low-melting metals, such as aluminum, separately from those used for high-melting metals.

Store slowly cooled crucibles separately: Store slowly cooled crucibles separately from those cooled quickly, as they may able have different properties that can affect their performance.

Store open-top crucibles inverted: Store open-top crucibles inverted to prevent debris and moisture from accumulating inside.

By following these storage tips, you can ensure that your graphite crucibles remain in good condition and perform optimally during use. Proper care and storage can help prevent damage and ensure that the crucibles more durable.

It’s time to choose a suitable graphite crucible for your application. Check below for more.

graphite crucible background

Graphite crucibles are mainly used to melt metals, and they come in two types: natural and synthetic.

1) Natural graphite

The main raw material is natural flake graphite, plus clay and other refractory ingredients. It’s called a clay graphite crucible, and the asphalt binder is called a carbon binder-type crucible. As the sole sintering force of clay is relying on the emblematic clay binder crucible, the former is stronger than the former and better at resisting thermal shocks. With melting capacities ranging from 250g to 500kg, it melts iron, steel, copper, copper alloys, and other non-ferrous metals.

Crucibles come with accessories like a slagging ladle, lid, joint ring, stirring cup and crucible support.

2) Artificial synthetic graphite

Natural graphite crucibles are usually composed of approximately 50% clay minerals, whereas man-made graphite crucibles with impurities (ash) of less than 1% can be used for refining high purity metals, as well as high purity graphite which has been purified using a special process. It is common to use artificial graphite crucibles to melt small quantities of precious and high purity metals as well as metals and oxides with a high melting point. Additionally, they can be used as crucibles for gas analysis in steel.
